Football Uses Commanding First Half To Take Down Rhodes College, 35-22

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - Southwestern University Football traveled to Rhodes College on Saturday, using 23-point first half to take down the Lynx, 35-22. Southwestern grabs their second SAA Conference win, improving to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference. 

The Pirates outscored the Lynx 23-7 in the first half. Rhodes scored a late touchdown, but the Pirates dominated the Lynx with 505 total offensive yards. Junior Tycen Williams was the work horse with 126 yards on the ground, while Graydon Thompson caught seven catches for 156 yards, currently sitting at 43 yards shy of the program single-season receiving record. 

Junior Jameer Martin was flying around on defense with 12 tackles as the Pirates secondary collected two pivotal picks. 

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southwestern drove down to Memphis needing to get back in the win column. 
  • The Pirates struck first as Rhodes snapped the ball over the punters head for a safety. 
  • Junior Jacob Smith at quarterback and Williams at running back led the Pirates down the field for the first touchdown. Smith punched in a rushing touchdown for 15 yards. 
  • Williams punched in his seventh touchdown of the season to make it 16-0. 
  • Junior Devan Phillips recently switched to the defensive side, snatching an interception and flipping the field. 
  • Williams broke into a gap in the second quarter for another rushing touchdown as the Pirates were dominating the trenches up 23-0. 
  • The Lynx salvaged a score with ten seconds left in the first half. 
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sophomore Reece Cutrer and Thompson were lethal to the Lynx secondary. After a Rhodes score, Southwestern responded with a 58-yard touchdown connection. 
  • Williams broke open another big run in the fourth quarter for his third touchdown of the game. 
  • The Pirates controlled the ground game with 228 yards as a team. 
  • Sophomore Gilbert Anderson III added an interception. 
  • Rhodes scored a late touchdown to end the game at 35-22. 
UP NEXT
Southwestern hosts Berry College next Saturday at 11 a.m. at home. The Pirates will celebrate senior day.
