MBB Beats Howard Payne, Fueled By 19-9 Run In Final Seven Minutes

BROWNWOOD, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Basketball concluded their four-game road stretch with a convincing victory over Howard Payne University on Tuesday night, 84-69. The win brings the Pirates back over .500 to 3-2 overall. 

The Yellow Jackets pulled within five points with seven minutes left to play. Southwestern struggled to stave off large runs against Texas Lutheran University and Dallas Christian College. However, Southwestern dug deep and finished the game on a 19-9 run to finish the job. Senior Shobby Enakpene continues to step up in the clutch moments with nine points in the final stretch. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Southwestern returned to the opening day starting lineup of senior Luke Hatcher, junior Luke Mills, junior Zach Gomez, junior Zach Shugars, and Enakpene. 
  • The Pirates started slow as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 11-3 run. 
  • Freshman Sawyer Batz and Gomez hit triples to help pull within four points, 18-14. 
  • HPU countered with three buckets in the paint, expanding the Pirates deficit to 28-18. 
  • The final five minutes of the first half was the key to the Pirates victory, along with the end of the second half. 
  • Southwestern mounted a monstrous 18-5 run, heading into halftime at up 36-33. 
  • The Pirates shot the ball with extreme efficiency in the second half at 14-28 from the field. However, HPU hung around tied at 48 with 15 minutes left. 
  • Enakpene started to catch fire, building a 58-50 lead with ten minutes to play. 
  • The Yellow Jackets continued to counter as the Pirates lead 65-60 with seven minutes left before stepping up defensively in crunch time. 
  • The 19-9 run to finish the game was fueled by tough defense and going nine from ten from the line. 
GAME NOTES
  • The win marked the largest victory of the season. 
  • Enakpene totaled 20 points with his third 20+ game of the season. He added four pivotal steals. 
  • Shugars led the squad in rebounding with eight boards. 
  • Mills added nine points and two blocks, while Shugars and Gomez posted double-figure nights scoring.

Southwestern returns home on Saturday at 2 p.m. to take on East Texas Baptist University.
