WSOC Notches Two Second Half Goals To Beat Howard Payne, 3-1

BROWNWOOD, TEXAS - Southwestern University Women's found themselves tied at halftime on the road against Howard Payne University on Tuesday night, before erupting for two goal in the second half from junior Jackie Powell to earn the victory, 3-1.

Powell totaled her third multi-goal game of the season with a career-high nine on the season. The junior records the highest season goals since Lindsay Jakszta had 11 goals in 2013. The single-season record is 15 as Powell also is tied for the most goals in a match at three against Hardin-Simmons.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pirates beat the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday for the ninth straight time.
  • The match was the final non-conference battle for the Pirates finishing at 5-4-2 outside the SAA.
  • Junior Ainsley VanTreeck earned the start on Tuesday night, manufacturing two early shots out of the gate.
  • In the 20th minute, sophomore Lindsey Gomez created space around her defender and sliding the opening goal past the keeper. The goal marked the second of her season and fourth in her career.
  • However, the Yellow Jackets equalized two minutes later. Both teams carried a 1-1 draw into halftime.
  • Freshman EJ Searfoss recorded all five of her saves in the half. The Pirate defense surrendered zero second half shots on goal.
  • Powell set the tone in the second half scoring the eventual game-winning goal 45 seconds in. Powell beat her initial defender from 40 yards out, dribbled down the flank, and fired a rocket near post top corner.
  • The sheer power and accuracy from Powell continues to show why defenses struggle to defend her.
  • In the 88th minute, the junior defender scored another screamer. This time, Powell took a few dribbles right and fired an off balance shot from 35 yards into the far post corner.
  • The goal marked her ninth of the season to help Southwestern head into this weekend of SAA play on the right note.
  • Seniors Lauren Powell and Sadie Schuster played a significant role in the victory, playing all 90 minutes on the back line.
