Turnovers Doom Women's Basketball Against Trinity

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO — The rhythm lost from an extended absence from the basketball court due to the winter storm was exasperated by facing the top defensive team in the conference in the Southwestern women's basketball team's 93-43 loss to Trinity University in the first round of the SCAC Championships.

Southwestern committed a season-high 34 turnovers against the team that led the conference in steals with 15.3 per game. The Tigers pressured the Pirate offense, stealing the ball 20 times to help generate 14 fastbreak points and a staggering 45 points off turnovers.

The Pirates opened the game struggling to make a basket, shooting just 2-for-10 from the field with Reece Sandercock shooting 2-for-3 while the Tigers ran out to a 19-4 lead.

Trinity extended the lead in the second, pressing for nine steals and scoring 27 points in the quarter in a balanced attack led by Maggie Shipley's 10 points off the bench.

Southwestern couldn't find its offensive footing until the fourth, scoring 20 points in the quarter, paced by Noel Pratts' eight points on 4-for-5 shooting. Pratts led the Pirates with 15 points on 7-for-17 shooting with five rebounds, three assists, and a steal and a block each. Reece Sandercock also reached double figures with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting and five rebounds.

Three players scored in double figures for the Tigers, led by Hailey Coleman's 19 points on a blistering 9-for-10 shooting.

With the loss, Southwestern drops to 2-7 for the season and exits the SCAC Championship Tournament. The Pirates will return after the tournament for a special senior day game to be announced later.
