Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Season

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to the Concordia Texas Tornados by a score of 2-1. 

Southwestern struck first on a pass from Kip Karschnik to Brendan Dauth, who found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead at the 12:06 mark. Concordia evened the game on a goal by Rodrigo Arellano off an assist by Joel Abrego at the 29:52 mark in the first half. 

The Pirates ended the first half outshooting the Tornados 8-5 with a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Concordia goalie Erik Rodriguez recorded three first-half saves. 

Concordia's Nicolas Kopinsky kicked in the game-winner on an unassisted goal at the 58:39 mark for the 2-1 lead. 

Southwestern goalie Sam Laude finished with three saves and two goals allowed while his counterpart, Rodriguez, finished with three saves and one goal allowed. The Pirates failed to capitalize on a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

With the loss, the Pirates fall to 0-1-1 on the season while Concordia improves to 2-1-0. The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Sep. 6 at 7:00 p.m. against Huston-Tillotson at the Round Rock Multi Sport Complex. The Pirates will then return home for a match against East Texas Baptist at 3:00 p.m.
