Pirates Knock Off No. 1 Trinity in Non-Conference Contest

Box Score

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University baseball got a pair of home runs from senior Ethan Hallmark and a go-ahead RBI double from freshman Hayden Craig to knock of the No. 1 team in the nation in the Trinity Tigers in a non-conference contest on Monday evening at Rockwell Field.

After Trinity scored two in the second inning, Southwestern got back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom half of the second before Hallmark stepped to the plate and homered to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead early in the contest.

Junior Cole Kelly tacked on a RBI single in the third to make it 4-2 before the Tigers struck for two in the top of the fifth to tie the game back at four.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kelly came through again, singling home another run to give the Pirates the lead back at 5-4. Hallmark would lead the sixth off with a solo shot while the Pirates added another run on a Tiger miscue to push their lead out to 7-4.

Trinity responded, as they had done for most of the night, scoring three in the seventh to even the game back up at seven a piece.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, freshman Jase Amaya drew a walk followed by the go-ahead RBI double from Craig to put Southwestern ahead for good at 8-7. Sophomore Daniel Montgomery Jr., who had checked in on the mound in the eighth, got a 1-2-3 inning to get his first win of the season and send the Pirate fans home happy with a huge win.

Freshman Austin Smith got the start while Trey Schwarz and senior Riley Wayland got work out of the pen. Montgomery (W, 1-0) had the most success and got the win, going two complete and allowing no runs or walks on only one hit.

Hallmark finished 2-for-3 with two homers, four RBI, and two runs scored while Kelly was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Craig was 1-for-4 with a RBI Amaya had a run scored to go with a walk. Senior Jason McCormack drew a pair of walks to go with a run scored.

Southwestern moves to 14-18 overall and returns to action tomorrow night as they welcome in Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 PM.
