Pirate Offense Stays Hot, Hunter Goes Distance in Series Opener Over Schreiner

Box Score

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University baseball team scored 10 runs on 11 hits while sophomore Colton Hunter went the distance as the Pirates knocked off Schreiner in game on of their SCAC baseball series, 10-2, at Rockwell Field on Thursday evening.

After Hunter put a zero up in the first, the Pirates took the early momentum, putting four runs on the board in the first inning. After a Daniel Montgomery Jr. walk, senior Jason McCormack laced a double down the line to put SU ahead 1-0.

Schreiner miscues in the field and on the mound pushed the lead to 3-0 before junior Colby Schmidt came away with a sac fly to make it a 4-0 game.

Schreiner got one back in the third, but Hunter remained strong to keep Southwestern comfortably ahead.

A RBI singles from freshman Austin Smith and an error on the same play by the Mountaineers gave the Pirates a 6-1 lead at the end of three.

Southwestern blew the game wide open in the sixth inning, putting up another four spot to take a 10-1 advantage. Freshman Seth Sparks got it started with a RBI single followed by a two RBI single from sophomore Byron Dowdell II and a RBI double from junior Cole Kelly.

Hunter (W, 2-2) went the distance, going a complete game and allowing two runs on eight hits to go with five strikeouts and only one walk as the Pirates took the 10-2 win in the series opener.

Dowdell continues his red hot pace from the plate, going 3-for-4 with a doulbe, three runs scored, and two RBIs while Kelly was 2-for-4 with a doubles and a RBI. McCormack and Sparks were each 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and a RBI while Montgomery was 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.

Southwestern moves to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the SCAC. They will look to win, and possibly sweep, the series on Friday beginning at 2 PM as they battle the Mountaineers in a pair of nine inning games.
