Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Ryan Staten had a hand in all three Pirate goals including the game winner, unassisted, in overtime to send Southwestern to a 3-2 win over UT Dallas on Saturday night. The win improves SU to 3-2 on the season.
Southwestern took control of the game early as Staten found Evan Perkins open in front of the goal in the 15th minute and then scored himself, unassisted, in the 24th minute.
UTD responded with a strong offensive attack and had two shots veer wide of the goal before getting one to fall as Robert McGinnis found Michael Matthews in the 30th minute and sent Southwestern into the break with a one goal lead 2-1.
The Pirates had a couple of great looks to open the second half that were saved by the Comet's defense, keeping them within striking distance. In the 28th minute, UT Dallas punched in the equalizer on a goal by Michael Darrow, assisted by Eric Pekkala.
The two teams traded shots the rest of the half as regulation came to a close, forcing overtime. Each team had their looks in the extra frame but it was Staten who had the magic touch as he blazed a shot into the back of the net with less than 30 seconds to play to give Southwestern the victory.
The balance of the game was evidenced in the shot count (UTD 17, SU 15) and corner kicks (SU 5, UTD 4). Both keepers, Daniel Poole for Southwestern and UTD's Steven Nicknish, had three saves in the game.
Southwestern will bring their two game win streak back home to face Mary Hardin Baylor on Tuesday, September 11th at 7:30 pm.
