SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Pirate volleyball team won 3-1,
3-1 over East Texas Baptist University and Pacific University in
day one of Trinity Fall Classic in San Antonio. Southwestern
improves to 7-1 on the year with the wins.
Southwestern faced East Texas Baptist University in their first
match and got off to a strong start, winning the first game 25-14.
The Tigers pushed past SU in game two as they were the first to 25,
25-23. The Pirates regrouped and had 14 kills with just three
errors in the third set to win 25-18 and cruised again in game
four, 25-21, to take the win.
Southwestern had a .252 hitting percentage as a team and were
led by junior Lindsay
Thompson's 16 kills. Junior Christina
Nicholls tallied 34 assists while sophomore Rachel Sellari
led with 18 digs and was followed closely by first-year Allison Stubbs'
17.
The story was much of the same in SU's second match against
Pacific University. The Pirates came out strong early, winning
25-16, dropped game two 22-25 and then won the final two games
25-15 and 25-22 to win 3-1.
The offensive attack was evenly distributed in this match as
sophomore Rachel
Thibodeau and Thompson (pictured) led with 12 kills a piece
followed by senior Lauren
Brown's 10. Nicholls upped her assists to 37 and had a team
high 21 digs. Sophomore Annie Hutson also
helped keep Pacific at bay with 11 digs while junior Taylor
Wright led with three blocking assists.
Southwestern will end this weekend's competition against two
teams that were nationally ranked in the AVCA preseason poll. They
take on Puget Sound and #13 Christopher Newport on Saturday at 1:15
and 3:45 in San Antonio.
