SENSATIONAL DEFENSE KEEPS PIRATES PERFECT

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern women's basketball team remained perfect after a 65-43 victory over Trinity University on Friday night to open up conference action. The win puts the Pirates at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference to start the year.

The outstanding Pirate defense held the Tigers to 22.2% from the field, 0% from long range and scoreless the last 12:22 of the first half thanks in part to an abysmal 25% free throw percentage by Trinity. Southwestern continued to attack the hoop and closed out the period on a jumper by senior Anna Fareed to put SU up by 21 heading into the break.

Trinity came out as a different team at the outset of the second half, scoring the opening 11 points in two and a half minutes to cut Southwestern's lead to 10 in a heartbeat.

Senior Shae Seagraves (pictured) stopped the momentum for Trinity scoring a jumper in which she was fouled and made the subsequent free throw and followed up with a jumper to push SU up by 15 once again.

The Pirates went on lock-down defensively, never allowing the Tigers back in the contest and kept  them at a safe distance. A three-pointer by Chelsea Leeder with 2:06 remaining pushed the lead back up to 21 and SU cruised the rest of the way.

Trinity ended the game shooting 25.9% from the field, 6.3% from beyond the arc, and just 54.5% from the free throw line while the Pirates were once again nearly perfect from the charity stripe shooting 90% for the game. They shot 37.7% from the field and 30.4% from long range.

Seagraves led all scorers with 22 points on 6-13 shooting from the field and 9-9 from three point. Fareed chipped in 15 points and Leeder contributed 11. Trinity's Abby Dietert was the lone Tiger in double figures with 20 points.

Sophomore Katelyn Bartell and Leeder led Southwestern with eight boards each while Fareed dished out a game high four assists and Seagraves led with four steals.

The Pirates remain at home but return to non-conference action as they look to make it six in a row as they face the University of Dallas on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
