Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern men's soccer team defeated
Austin College 3-1 Friday afternoon to remain undefeated in SCAC
Conference action. They improve to 6-4 on the year and 3-0 in the
SCAC. AC falls to 4-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference.
Southwestern struck early when Ryan
Staten (pictured) took a hard, low shot at goal that bounced
off an AC defender and into the back of the goal to give the
Pirates a quick 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game. The
Pirates nearly made it a two point lead with 29 minutes left to
play in the half but AC's keeper made a shoestring save on Evan Perkins' shot
to keep the goal from becoming reality.
SU had complete control of the game in the first half allowing
Austin College minimal looks at goal until the 'Roos pulled even on
a looping cross by Temple that found Melton who headed it home.
Just before halftime Southwestern got two great looks at
goal that demanded two tough saves from the AC keeper. Alex
Keller broke away from the pack and took a shot on goal that was
saved and Matthew
Nickell's hard follow forced another diving save. The match
remained tied 1-1 heading into the break.
Early into the second half Southwestern went up again, 2-1, with
a well executed attack. Staten dribbled from left to right, found
McCulloch on the right side of the box who one touched a pass to a
wide open Keller in front of the goal. Then, just over five
minutes later, Perkins got out on a breakaway and found Keller who
was streaking towards the goal and after he was pulled down in the
box Staten put away the penalty kick to give SU a 3-1 lead.
Solid defense and constant pressure allowed Southwestern to
secure the victory.
Southwestern had 21 shots to Austin's 12 but had six fewer
corner kicks (9-3).
The Pirates next face league-leading Colorado College on Sunday
at 12:00.
