Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - After scoring with three minutes remaining
in regulation to tie the game the Southwestern Pirates lost their
first conference match, 2-1 to #7 Trinity, on a penalty kick with
1:33 remaining in overtime to hand SU their first conference loss
of the season.
Southwestern was fortunate that early mistakes didn't cost them
as it took a moment for the Pirates to settle into the game.
Trinity got the first good luck at goal as Tommy Barros took a hard
low shot, but keeper Nick
Pierce made a tough save to keep the game scoreless.
The Pirates missed taking the lead by inches when Alex
Keller passed to Evan Perkins who
swung it around to Forrest Baker
(pictured). Baker's low shot slid just outside the right post with
25 minutes to play in the half.
Trinity scored with three and a half minutes remaining in the
first half on an attempted clear that took a Tiger bounce to Zach
Garcia who was unmarked in front of the goal. He slid his
shot low and away from Pierce in goal giving TU a 1-0 lead heading
into the break.
After Southwestern escaped a close call to start the second half
Baker ripped a shot from 40 yards out that started to dip under the
crossbar forcing Benefield to make a punch save over the bar,
keeping the score 1-0.
Another great look by the Pirates forced a save when Dishon
Isaac served a lofting ball from the right side across the goal to
John Mark
Mines streaking in from the opposite corner. His shot was
punched over the crossbar by Benefield, ending the threat.
The Pirates continued to push as numerous corner attempts were
just off the mark including a header by Keller from Ryan Jensen's
corner kick that was just over the bar once again.
Southwestern tied the match in dramatic fashion with just under
three minutes to play. Fernando
Leon's long free kick from deep in Southwestern territory
sailed towards the goal and forced TU's keeper to make another
punch save giving the Pirates a corner opportunity. Mines quickly
served the ball in from the corner to the far post where Baker was
perfectly positioned for the header into the back of the net for
the tying goal.
In overtime Pierce made another great save on a breakaway by
TU's Jordan Wade keeping the score tied.
The match was decided with 1:33 left on the clock when a tackle
in the box gave the Tigers a penalty kick. Yuri Ribeiro placed the
ball in the opposite side of a diving Pierce handing TU the 2-1
win.
Southwestern falls to 9-5 on the season and 6-1 in SCAC action
while the Tigers improve to 13-2 and 7-0. The Pirates have an off
weekend from conference action and head to San Antonio to face
regional opponent UC Santa Cruz on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
