Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas – Continuous attacks continue to serve
the Pirates well as they scored early and often en route to a 3-0
win over Birmingham Southern College Friday afternoon to remain
perfect in the SCAC. Southwestern improves to 8-4 overall and 5-0
in the conference after the win while BSC falls to 3-5-3 and
0-3-2.
Southwestern started the barrage of shots early and it
didn't take long for them to reap the rewards as Alex
Keller's shot bounced off a diving BSC defender and into the
goal. He soon followed with a more straight-forward goal that he
headed in off a crossing ball from John Mark Mines (pictured) and
put it in the back of the net giving SU a quick 2-0 lead ten
minutes into the game.
Evan Perkins nearly made it a three goal lead on a breakaway but
his soft touch shot to beat the keeper was cleared by a defender
just before it crossed the goal line. Birmingham Southern had good
looks throughout the remainder of the half but Southwestern's solid
defensive line forced tough shots and held the SU 2-0 lead in
tact.
Perkins got his goal just 30 seconds into the second half,
however, when Ryan Staten found him wide open in front of the goal
on a quick one-touch pass and all Perkins had to do was tap it home
giving Southwestern a 3-0 lead.
With a new focus the Pirates closed out the contest to keep
their SCAC record in tact.
Southwestern had 19 shots and held the Panthers to only seven.
They remain at home for another SCAC match against Millsaps College
at 2:00 pm on Sunday.
