Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - With determination in their eyes and in
their all black uniforms the Southwestern men's soccer team kept
their conference undefeated streak alive with a 4-1 victory over
Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Pirates
improve to 7-4 on the year and 4-0 in the SCAC.
With less than 30 seconds ticked of the clock at the start of
the game SU pounced on the Tigers with great team execution on the
attack. After a throw in Forrest Baker found Evan Perkins in front
of the goal who unselfishly made the one extra pass to Alex Keller
(pictured) who was open two yards behind Perkins. Keller's
shot slid under the crossbar giving the Tigers' keeper no chance at
the save.
Southwestern didn't relax after the go-ahead goal and used
a Tiger error to their advantage. CC's defender passed the ball
back to the keeper who picked up the ball giving SU an indirect
free kick not more than five yards from the goal line. Colin
McCulloch touched the ball and Ryan Staten followed with a missle
into the back of the net to put Southwestern up 2-0 in less than
five minutes.
When most teams would begin a defensive-minded game Southwestern
continued to press and their tenacity was rewarded. McCulloch
floated a beautiful ball from midfield to Keller who was streaking
towards the corner. Keller collected and chipped the ball to
Perkins in front of the goal to put SU up 3-0.
The Tigers had a couple of solid looks at goal including one
shot that bounced off the cross bar and another punched over the
net by Nick Peirce. The 3-0 lead lasted until after the break.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half Colorado College
pulled closer. A short, quick play corner kick was played into the
box and Parham's shot careened off SU's defender and
bounced into the goal bringing CC within two, 3-1.
Keller pushed the lead back to three when he won the 50/50 ball
off a goal kick that drifted in the wind deep into attacking
territory. After settling the ball Keller beat two CC defenders,
faked the hard shot and then soft touched his shot just inside the
low right-hand corner to put Southwestern back up by three,
4-1.
The Southwestern defense kept the Tigers caged for the remainder
of the game, allowing the Pirates to close out the match with a 4-1
win.
SU had 16 shots to Colorado's 13 and took eight corners while
the Tigers had nine. Keller finished with two goals and one assist,
Perkins with one goal and one assist, Staten with one goal and
Baker and McCulloch with one and two assists respectively.
The Pirates put their perfect record on the line as they play
host to Birmingham Southern on Friday at home following the women's
game at approximately 4:00 pm.
