Box Score Southwestern's men's soccer team fell to 3-2 on the season
after a goal in the 85th minute lifted Hardin Simmons University to
a 2-1 victory in the final game of the American Southwest
Conference-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Challenge on
Saturday at a rainy HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene.
The game started out as a physical contest with seven fouls in
the first 15 minutes. The Pirates had some solid looks at the goal
but were unable to put any away. Hardin Simmons was first on the
scoreboard when Zach Johnson snuck one past SU's keeper Nick Pierce
to put HSU up 1-0.
Southwestern seemed to have control of the game in the second
half, with senior David Lozano getting some good looks at the goal,
but weren't able to capitalize on the opportunties. Hardin Simmons
went up by two, 2-0, when Isaiah Hicks scored in the 75th minute.
Senior Josh Spencer pulled the Pirates within one, 2-1, on a
penalty kick, but SU would run out of time and drop the match by
the same count.
The Pirates took 11 shots and had four corner kicks on the
afternoon while HSU had seven shots and three corners. Pierce
recorded one save while SU kept HSU's keeper Waters on his toes as
he recorded seven saves.
Southwestern will open conference action with a night game at
Colorado College on Friday afternoon. Game time is set for 8:00pm.
