PIRATES COMPLETE SWEEP OF SCHREINER WITH 8-5 WIN

Schreiner put the first run on the board in the first inning by stringing together three base hits. Southwestern matched it with a run of their own when sophomore first baseman Chris Lowry hit a screamer up the middle and drove in junior centerfielder Todd Boone.

The Pirates pushed one run across in each of the second and fourth innings and three runs in the fifth to go up 6-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, a pair of singles by Boone and Michael Murphy followed by a walk to Belski loaded the bases for Wooten. Wooten's walk brought in Boone and kept the bases loaded for third baseman Ricky Gomez. Gomez struck out swinging to bring up Brent McMullen who launched a long fly ball that was caught at the warning track to end the threat and keep the Pirates lead a 7-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Schreiner started to mount a comeback. After a series of walks they were able to push one across and the bases remained loaded for Justin Garza. Garza hit a little dribbler that stayed in front of the plate that was fielded by catcher Murphy who completed the play with a force out at home to give the Mountaineers two outs. A well executed hit and run single brought in two more Mountaineers and cut Southwestern's lead to three, 7-4. Southwestern relief pitcher Chris Webber walked the bases loaded and paid for it when he hit Oscar Ibieta with a pitch to cuts the Pirate's lead to 7-5.

After another pitching change which brought in freshman right hander Aaron Garza, Southwestern was able to get out of the inning by striking out Schreiner's A.J. Mann.

Southwestern was able to push their lead back to three after a pair of singles to right field by Lowry and Boone were followed by a slow roller to the pitcher by Murphy that was bobbled and then throw away to allow Murphy on and Boone to score.

The winning pitcher for the Pirates was sophomore Chris Churchwell. Churchwell pitched 6 innings and had 7 strikeouts, walked 1 batter and allowed just four hits and one run.

Offensively, the Pirates were led by Todd Boone who was 3-3 on the afternoon with 1 RBI and scored three times. Wooten also had a solid afternoon going 2-4 with one run.

The win improves Southwestern improves to 4-3 on the season. They will take on South Region opponent Howard Payne University in another home game on Tuesday, February 10 at 5:00 p.m.
