On a wet and sloppy day, the Pirates dominated every aspect of
the match to defeat the University of Dallas 8-1.
Southwestern was led by seniors Josh Spencer and Checo Carreon and
Junior Alex Keller.
The story of the day was the dominance by the Pirate front
line. The Pirates took their first shot in the 9th minute and
never looked back. In the next 4 minutes the Pirates would
take 5 shots on goal. Senior Checo Carreon blistered four
balls toward the goal during in the short amount of time.
Carreon's final shot rang of the right post where junior midfielder
Tom Holleman had positioned himself perfectly to score the first
goal of the game. Southwestern would take a 2-0 lead in the
41st minute on senior forward Josh Spencer's first goal of the
game. A well played first half in sloppy conditions would end
2-0.
The second half started out with hope for the University of
Dallas when, in the 54th minute, Ryan Meske finished off a bouncing
ball in the box to pull within one. This, however, was the
closest the Pirates would let the game get. Six minutes
later, Dallas keeper Paul Stauduhar made a diving save on a Checo
Carreon offering at the goal. The well coached Pirates were
on the spot and Josh Spencer scored his second goal of the game on
the rebound from the keeper. Spencer completed his hat trick
2 minutes later thanks to an assist from Tom Holleman. Tony
Holzbach's 74th minute goal and Alex Keller's 77th, 87th, and 89th
minute goals polished off an already impressive day for the
Pirates.
At the end of the day, the Pirates amassed 27 shot and 9 corner
kicks while the University of Dallas was allowed just 7 shots and 1
corner kick. Josh Spencer scored his 5th, 6th, and 7th goals
of the season. Keller scored his 3rd, 4th, and 5th goals of
the season. Senior forward Checo Carreon had four shots on
goal and two assists. Holzbach's and Holleman's goals were
their 1st on the year.
The Pirates improve to 5-4 and will travel to Jackson, MS to
take on the Millsaps Majors on October 9 in SCAC action followed by
a bout with Birmingham Southern on October 11.
