In the opening round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the SU baseball team lost to #14 DePauw University by a score of 12-5 in Danville, KY.
The Pirates got on the board first when junior Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) drove the first pitch of the third inning over the right field fence to make it 1-0. In the fourth, the Tigers put up a pair of runs on three hits for a one-run lead.
In the top of the sixth, Southwestern's Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) led off with a walk followed by a single off the bat of Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS). The next batter was John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) who connected on a 1-2 offering and put it over the right field fence for a three-run homer and a 4-2 lead. DePauw evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on three hits and a Pirate error.
The Bucs again took the lead in the seventh inning when catcher Nick Ashford (Red Oak, TX/Red Oak HS) scored on a throwing error by the DePauw shortstop. The wheels fell apart for the Pirates in the bottom of the seventh when SU pitching allowed eight runs on five hits, four walks and one error.
Wooten and Noggle were both 2-4 with one run scored. Wooten had three RBI while Noggle had one. Clark, Boone and Ashford scored the other runs for SU.
On the mound, Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) started and went six innings while allowing four earned runs. The junior struck out six, walked two and gave up 10 hits. First-year Brantley Freeman (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS) suffered the loss as he gave up four earned runs on three walks and one hit without recording an out. He falls to 3-5 on the year.
The Pirates face off against Millsaps College at 3:30 pm eastern time in Danville, KY in an elimination game.
