SU Drops Both Games of Doubleheader to #22 UMHB

The Southwestern University baseball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday (Feb. 27) as the Pirates lost two games to 22nd-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Georgetown, TX by scores of 14-12 and 10-6.

In the first game, the Pirates dug themselves a 7-0 hole through the first two innings but fought back to tie the game at 12-12 after five. SU scored three in the third, three in the fourth and six in the fifth. The Crusaders managed to push a single run across in both the sixth and seventh for the eventual 14-12 win.

In game two, Southwestern struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first but then surrendered two in two in the UMHB half of the second. The Crusaders then put a five-spot on the Pirates in the third for a 7-2 advantage. The scored remained there until the fifth when UMHB added one but SU scored four in the bottom half to pull within 8-6. The Pirates allowed two runs in the top of the seventh and then, in the bottom of the inning, loaded the bases with two outs but a fielder's choice ended the comeback attempt.

On the day for the Bucs, junior Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) was 5-6 at the plate and drew three walks. He failed to reach base just once and had drove in four runs while scoring two. Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) recorded a hit five times in eight at bats, scoring three and driving in four.

On the mound, in game one the pitcher of record was sophomore Joe Lange (Houston, TX/Lamar HS). He threw two innings in relief and allowed two earned runs while striking out none and walking none. The loss drops his season record to 1-2. First-year Kyle Belski (Missouri City, TX/Dulles HS) suffered the loss in the second game after allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout. He is now 0-2 on the year.

The Pirates now sit at 4-6 for the year while Mary Hardin-Baylor improves to 10-0.

Southwestern stays at home for its next games which will be played Saturday (Mar. 1) in Georgetown with Hardin-Simmons University coming to town for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
