SU junior Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) threw a complete game shutout to lead the Pirates baseball team to a 9-0 victory over 15th-ranked Texas Lutheran University in Georgetown, TX on Tuesday (Feb. 26) afternoon.
With strong winds blowing in from left field all game, scoring was a premium in the early going. The Pirates got a run in the first inning as Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a Blake Williams (Lufkin, TX/Lufkin HS) double down the right field line. In the bottom of the second, Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS) singled up the middle to score Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) from second base for a 2-0 lead.
Williams got his second double of the game in the fourth inning to drive in another run and put the Pirates ahead 3-0. SU blew the game open by scoring four runs on four hits and one TLU error in the seventh inning. The Bucs then added a pair in the eighth on two hits and two errors.
Willis turned in a great performance on the mound for SU, going all nine innings and scattering just five singles. He recorded nine strikeouts while not issuing a single walk. Willis retired the side in order in three straight innings, including striking out the side in the fourth. He is now 2-1 on the season.
At the plate, Williams was 2-5 with four runs batted in for the Bucs with a pair of doubles. Senior Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) led Southwestern with three hits in four at bats. He scored three runs, drove in one and recorded a steal.
Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) drove in a pair of runs and scored once while going 1-3 at the plate and drawing two walks. Gonzales and Clark each recorded two hits, scored once and drove in one.
SU won its third game in a row to improve its record to 4-4 while TLU falls to 5-6.
The Pirates play again on Wednesday (Feb. 27) in Georgetown with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor coming to town for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
