In the season finale on Sunday (Feb. 24), the Southwestern University women lost in Sherman, TX to the Austin College Kangaroos by a score of 58-45 but the Pirates still reach the SCAC tournament next weekend.
Austin scored the first seven points and took an 11-2 lead just over six minutes in to the game. SU fought back and scored eight-straight points with five of them coming from Narisa Trammell (Godley, TX/Godley HS) to pull within one. The lead went back and forth the rest of the half with the Pirates holding a 21-20 lead at halftime.
Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) hit a jumper to start the second half for the Pirates' largest lead of the game before the game became tied at 29-29. The Roos then scored the next 13 points for a commanding 13-point lead they would not relinquish. AC built its lead as high as 18 and the game ended with Austin ahead 58-45.
SU was led in scoring by Azizi and first-year Molly Mitchell (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls HS) who both had nine points. Jessica Herbst (Boerne, TX/Boerne HS) finished with eight points and senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) led the team with five rebounds.
The Pirates finish the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and a 6-9 mark in the conference. Austin, meanwhile, finishes its second season in the SCAC with a 7-18 record and 6-9 in the SCAC.
The next game for the Pirates will be at the SCAC Tournament on Friday (Feb. 29) in Conway, AR at 1:00 pm against defending national champion DePauw University.
