Pirates Go Cold Late in 68-57 Loss at Colorado College

The SU women's team took a one-point lead with 3:27 left to play but the Pirates did not score the rest of the game as Colorado College edged SU by a score of 68-57 in Colorado Springs, CO on Friday (Feb. 22) night.

The score stayed close during the early part of the game with Southwestern holding a 19-15 lead just under 10 minutes in to the first half on a Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) three-pointer. Six minutes later, the Tigers were ahead by seven points. The Pirates fought back and tied the game at 30-30 but trailed by four at the half.

CC built its lead back up to seven during the second half, with the score at 48-41 with 13:39 to play. The Pirates cut the lead to two just minutes later but trailed 54-48 with 6:35 on the clock. Southwestern clawed its way back and Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) completed a three-point play with a layup and free throw at the 3:27 mark. Colorado College scored the next 11 points to put the game away.

Thomas posted her second double-double in as many games with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The senior was 3-9 from the floor and 8-9 from the free throw line. Hill totaled 11 points, connecting on 4-8 from the field and 3-6 from three-point range.

Junior Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) pitched in with 11 points on 5-9 shooting, including 1-1 from beyond the three-point arc while Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) scored 10. Hoch also recorded six rebounds and five assists.

The Pirates held a small 34-31 advantage in rebounds and turned the ball over 17 times while forcing the Tigers in to 13. The advantage in shooting went to CC as the Tigers shot 46.2 percent (24-52) from the field while Southwestern was 37.3 percent (19-51).

SU's record drops to 12-12 on the year and 6-8 in the SCAC. Colorado is now 12-11 and 8-6 in the conference and is assured of the second seed from the Western Division.

The Pirates will play at Austin College on Sunday (Feb. 24) at 12:00 pm in Sherman, TX in a game with implications for the conference tournament next weekend.
