Box Score

The SU men's baseball team slit a doubleheader on Sunday (Feb. 17) in Georgetown, TX as they dominated Schreiner University in game one with a two-hit shutout and a 14-run outburst but then struggled in game two, falling by a score of 9-2.

Southwestern 14, Schreiner 0

In the first game, a seven-inning affair, the Pirates got on the board in the first with a two-out RBI single from Blake Williams (Lufkin, TX/Lufkin HS) scored John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) from second. It was in the fourth inning that Southwestern broke the game open. The Pirates had eight straight hitters reach base with seven hits and one walk, totaling seven runs for the inning for an 8-0 lead through four.

In the fifth frame, the Bucs added six more runs on four hits. Pirate hits included a Wooten triple, a two-run double from Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) and RBI singles from Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) and Williams.

On the mound, junior Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) started and went four innings. He allowed just one hit and faced a minimum 12 hitters. He struck out six and walked none in earning his first win of the season, moving his record to 1-1. Wooten threw two innings in relief, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out four. Junior Kyle Foreman (Georgetown, TX/Northwest HS) threw the last inning, not allowing any hits or runs.

Falcone was 3-4 for the game with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Williams also had three hits in five at bats, driving in three and scoring once. Wooten was 2-3 with one walk, scoring three times and driving in one. Other players with multi-hit games were Gonzales and Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS). Those two combined to push four runs across the plate and score three times.

The Bucs finished with 14 runs on 16 hits, both were season-highs.

Schreiner 9, Southwestern 2

The second game was a different story for the Pirates. Southwestern loaded the bases with two-out in the bottom of the second but failed to push a run across. Schreiner got on the board in the third after a two-out double drove home a run. The Mountaineers then added to their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth on three hits.

In the seventh inning, the Pirates fell further behind after allowing a pair of runs, making the score 5-0. The Bucs finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Williams hit a two-out double to left centerfield to score Falcone and Murphy who had both just walked. Trailing by just three, the Pirates allowed four more runs in the eighth inning with three of them being earned. This ran the score to the final 9-2 mark. No Southwestern player had more than one hit in the game.

First-year Kyle Belski (Missouri City, TX/Dulles HS) was the hard-luck loser for the Pirates as he threw three innings in his collegiate debut and allowed one earned run. He gave up two hits and struck out two while not issuing a walk. He is now 0-1 on the year.

As a team, SU was just 6-32 and left 11 runners on base. The Pirates record now stands at 1-3 while Schreiner moves to 1-4.

The Pirates continue play on Tuesday (Feb. 19) when they head down the road to face off with Concordia University-Austin at 7:00 pm.
