Pirates Even Record with 16-Point Win Over Millsaps

Three different players reach double-figures in scoring for the SU women's basketball team to push them to a 71-55 victory over Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Millsaps College on Friday (Feb. 15) night in Georgetown, TX.

The first half saw 11 lead changes and four tied scores as the two teams went back and forth for much of the period. The Majors' largest lead of the game came when from an early 4-0 lead. The game stayed tight until Southwestern closed out the half with a 10-2 run, aided by eight points from senior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) during the run. SU took a 35-28 lead in to the intermission.

Millsaps came out in the second half and quickly cut the lead to one with 16:50 on the clock but the Pirates kept fighting. With the score at 41-39, the Pirates scored 15 unanswered points to take a commanding lead with under 10 minutes to go. SU held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Thomas led the Bucs with 16 points on 5-8 shooting and she was 6-6 from the charity stripe. Fellow senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) pitched in with 10 points, four rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist.

Junior forward Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) also scored 10, shooting 3-4 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. First-year post player Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks while also adding five points.

Southwestern forced the Majors in to 28 turnovers but committed 26. MC held a 47-42 advantage on the boards. The Pirates had six blocks as a team and shot 42.3 percent (22-52) as a team. SU got 30 of it's points inside the paint against a smaller Millsaps squad.

The Pirates improved their record for the season to 11-11 and 5-7 in the conference while the Majors drop to 6-17, 3-10.

Southwestern hosts Hendrix College on Saturday (Feb. 16) for the final home game of the season at 6:00 pm.
