Box Score
The Southwestern baseball team totaled 10 runs againt the University of Texas at Dallas on Wednesday (Feb. 13) afternoon in Georgetown, TX but the 2007 NCAA tournament qualifying Comets were too much for the Pirates as SU lost 17-10.
The Pirates staked UTD to a 3-0 lead after the top half of the first but managed to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning as the first three SU hitters loaded the bases and the Comet shortstop made a diving stop that turned in to a double-play, but scored a run. In the third, junior Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) drove a two-out single through the left side to score Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS) from second. The Pirates then got another run in the fourth as first-year Kyle Belski (Missouri City, TX/Dulles HS) drove his first collegiate home run over the center field fence, tying the game at 3-3.
Over the next four innings, UT-Dallas totaled 10 runs for a 13-3 lead heading in to the SU half of the eighth. The Bucs then got an RBI single from Belski and a two-run single off the bat of Falcone with two outs. With the score at 13-6, the Comets added four more runs in the ninth. Southwestern then added four more runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth with four different players driving in runs for the final score of 17-10.
Belski was 2-3 at the plate with two runs batted in, two runs scored and one walk. Gonzales and Falcone were both 3-5 for the Bucs, both driving in two runs with Gonzales scoring twice and Falcone once.
Sophomore John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) managed a pair of hits in six at-bats, scoring once for the Pirates. First-year Patrick Keenan (Colleyville, TX/Colleyville Heritage HS) was 1-1 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.
As a team, the Pirates had 13 hits but were out-hit by the Comets, who pounded out 25 base hits. A positive for SU is that in eight out of nine innings, the Pirates' leadoff hitter reached base.
First-year Brantley Freeman (Mansfield, TX/Mansfield HS) started on the mound for the Bucs, lasting four innings in his collegiate debut. The southpaw allowed three runs, just one of which was earned, while striking out two and walking none. Joe Lange (Houston, TX/Lamar HS) suffered the loss for Southwestern as he gave up four earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief. He is now 0-1 on the year. As a team, SU allowed 15 earned runs.
The Pirates fall to 0-2 for the season while UTD opened its season with a victory.
Southwestern is scheduled to host Schreiner University on Saturday (Feb. 16) with game time set for 2:00 pm.
