Southwestern Comes Up Short Against #13 DePauw

The SU women's basketball team pulled within four with two minutes left but lost by 10 to defending national champion Depauw University on Friday (Feb. 1) evening in Georgetown, TX.

In the first half, DU went up early but Southwestern jumped out to its largest lead of five with 10:16 left in the half on a jumpter in the paint from sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS). The Tigers then pulled the score closer and took the lead with 2:27 on the clock, eventually building that lead to 24-17 at the half. In the second half, DePauw kept the Pirates at bay with Southwestern getting the score to 47-43 on a Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) layup with 2:30 left. DePauw scored six-straight to put the game out of reach and the game ended at 55-45.

Senior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points and pulling down nine rebounds. She led the Pirates in both categories while shooting 3-5 from the floor and 3-4 from the charity stripe. Azizi finished with eight points and four rebounds while senior Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) also scored eight to go along with five boards.

The loss drops the Pirates to 9-9 overall and 3-6 in the SCAC. Meanwhile, 13th-ranked DePauw improves to 15-4, 9-0 in the conference.

The Pirates play again on Saturday (Feb. 2) when they host SCAC member Centre College in Georgetown at 6:00 pm.
