First Half the Difference as Southwestern Falls at Hendrix

On Sunday (Jan. 6), the SU women's basketball team trailed by 13 at the half and eventually lost 72-58 against Hendrix College in Conway, AR in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Pirates failed to take a lead at any point during the first half and trailed by 13 at halftime. SU then charged out in the second half outscoring the Warriors 17-2 during the opening six minutes for a 44-42 lead. Sophomore Narisa Trammell (Godley, TX/Godley HS) hit a pair of three-pointers to help spur the run. The Pirates' lead was short-lived, however, as Hendrix scored the next six points and SU never led again.

Junior forward Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) was the sole Pirate to score in double-digits, totaling 15 points on 7-12 shooting from the field and 1-2 from the charity stripe. Senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) finished with nine points, a team-high five rebounds and four steals.

Center Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake Hs), a senior, also finished with nine points on 3-5 shooting. She was also 3-6 from the free throw line and led the Pirates with four assists. Trammell ended the game with nine points and a pair of steals.

Hendrix shot 51 percent (26-51) from the field and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the free throw line while the Pirates made 44.2 percent (23-52) from the floor. SU was also out-rebounded 25-17 and turned the ball over 23 times.

Southwestern's season record falls to 8-4 and 2-2 in SCAC contests. The Warriors upped their record to 8-4 and 2-1 in the conference.

The Pirates return to play when they travel to San Antonio, TX on Saturday (Jan. 12) to take on Trinity University at 3:00 pm.
