The Southwestern University women's basketball team was held scoreless over the final 4:57 of the game against Sewanee in Sewanee, TN and fell by three on Friday (Jan. 25) evening in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The game was tied at 15-15 at the 11:15 mark in the first half but less than four minutes later, Sewanee had pulled ahead by 11. The Pirates then scored seven straight with five of those coming from senior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS). The Tigers held on to the lead and took a 33-26 lead in to the half.
Southwestern came out strong in the second half, tying the game at 40-40 with 13:32 on the clock. At the 10:34 mark, Thomas hit a pair of free throws to give SU a five point lead, its largest of the game. The score was 54-42 with 4:57 left to play and over the remaining time the Pirates turned the ball over four times and missed all three shots the attempted as Sewanee scored five for the 57-54 victory.
Thomas finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor and 3-4 shooting from the free throw line. She also led all players with eight rebounds. Sophomore Narisa Trammell (Godley, TX/Godley HS) connected on 4-5 from beyond the three-point arc and 5-6 from the field for 14 points.
Sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) finished with 11 points and six rebounds. As a team, the Pirates out-shot and out-rebounded Sewanee but were undone by 24 turnovers.
SU shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the floor while the Tigers made 34.5 percent (20-58) of their shots. On the boards, the Pirates pulled down 33 rebounds to Sewanee's 28.
Southwestern drops to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the SCAC and Sewanee is now 6-10, 2-5.
The Pirates head to Atlanta, GA for a game with 22nd-ranked Oglethorpe at 6:00 pm.
