The Southwestern University women's basketball team dropped to 2-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 80-52 loss at the hands of Trinity University on Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon in San Antonio, TX.
The Pirates fell behind early and never recovered, already down by 10 at the 12:53 mark in the first half. SU trailed by 18 at the half and by as many as 34 during the second half.
Senior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) scored a team-high 13 points and also added seven rebounds. First-year Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch HS) led the Pirates with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Southwestern was out-rebounded 49-36 and out-shot 41.7 percent (30-72) to 31.5 percent (17-54). The Pirates were a lowly 4-21 (19 percent) from three-point range in the game and turned the ball over 19 times.
The Pirates fall to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the SCAC while Trinity is now 10-2, 5-0.
Southwestern plays at home again next weekend when they host Birmingham-Southern College on Friday (Jan. 18) at 6:00 pm and then Rhodes College on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 6:00 pm.
