Pirate Men Hand Millsaps 4-0 Loss in SCAC Opener

The SU men's soccer team turned in a dominating performance in its opening Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Sunday (Sept. 23) with a 4-0 victory over Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.

The Pirates got their first goal off the foot of Josh Spencer (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) at the 11:31 mark. Slgihtly less than 15 minutes later, Spencer took a pass from Kyle Strine (Houston, TX/Klein Oak HS) and beat the Majors' keeper again to make the score 2-0. The score remained 2-0 through the half.

In the second period, Junior David Lozano (Austin, TX/University of Dayton) scored on a breakaway with less than 19 minutes to go in the game. Later, at 80:47, Lozano scored his second goal of the game with an assist going to Scott Smith (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) who crossed the ball to the front of the net.

Junior goalkeeper faced just three shots in the game and stopped all of them for the shutout win. SU held a sizeable 22-4 advantage in shots and put 16 shots on goal compared the Majors with three.

The win improves the Pirates' season record to 5-4-1 and 1-0 in the SCAC while Millsaps is now 2-5 with a 0-1 conference record.

The Pirates play again on Friday (Sept. 28) in Georgetown, TX when they host the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m.
