19th-Ranked Pirates go 4-0 on Opening Weekend

The #19 Southwestern University volleyball team completed a perfect weekend to open the season as they beat the University of Texas-Dallas Comets on their home floor followed by wins over Hardin-Simmons University, East Texas Baptist University and the University of Texas-Tyler on Friday (Aug. 31) and Saturday (Sept. 1) in Dallas, TX.

The Pirates won opening match against UTD 3-1 (30-20, 30-27, 29-31, 30-25), Senior Katy Lukaszewski (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS) led all players with 18 kills in 65 total attempts for a .215 attack percentage. Lukaszewski posted a double-double as she also had 16 digs. Senior setter Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connelly HS) also posted a double-double as she dished out 47 assists and recorded 21 digs.

Sophomore Audra Gentry (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Preparatory) had a big game offensively as she recorded a career-high 17 kills to go along with 11 digs. Sophomore libero Samantha Lingamfelter (New Braunfels, TX/New Braunfels HS) recorded a team-high 24 digs and fellow sophomore Reese Cisneros (Pearland, TX/Pearland HS) had 12 digs.

In the second match on Friday, SU downed Hardin-Simmons 3-1 (30-18, 21-30, 30-21, 30-21). Lukaszewski again led all players as she racked up 16 kills along with 10 digs. Gentry tallied 14 kills, 16 digs and six service aces while Lingamfelter totaled 24 digs. Bruce recorded 39 assists.

On Saturday, Southwestern began the day with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-17, 30-27) pummeling of East Texas Baptist. Bruce dished out 32 assists in the win and Lingamfelter dug nine Tiger attacks. Gentry led SU with 10 kills and first-year Lauren Brown (Austin, TX/St. Michael's Academy) turned in an eight-kill performance. The Bucs had a season-high 10 blocks and only eight attack errors.

The Pirates final match ended with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-16, 31-29) win over UTT. Lukaszewski notched a match-high 16 kills. Bruce had 35 assists and 16 digs while Lingamfelter and Smith both had double-digit digs.

For the weekend, Lukaszewski averaged 4.38 kills per game by hitting at a .231 clip while Gentry averaged 3.85 kills per game and totaled 12 service aces. Bruce totaled 153 assists, good for a 10.93 assist per game average. Lingamfelter picked up 70 digs, a five dig per game average.

SU will play again next weekend as they travel to Lexington, VA for a tournament at Washington & Lee University where they will have four matches on Friday (Sept. 7) and Saturday (Sept. 8).
