The Southwestern University women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Millsaps College on Friday (Feb. 2), picking up a 69-58 victory over the Majors in Jackson, MS.
The Pirates opened up the scoring with a three-pointer from sophomore Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) 16 seconds in to the game and never trailed. SU built its lead to double-digits in just over six minutes when Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) drained a three to make the score 14-4. Later in the half, the Pirates used the final six minutes to score the last seven points in the half, extending the lead from 12 to 19 at halftime.
Southwestern's largest lead of the game was 19, which they held multiple times. The last 19 point lead of the game came with 13:43 left to play thanks to a Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) jumper that made the score 49-30. The Majors cut the lead to nine with a free throw that only lasted until a Stephenson layup put SU back ahead by 11 to end the game.
Sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) led the way for the Pirates, pouring in 18 points on 8-14 shooting. She also hit 2-2 from the charity stripe, pulled down eight rebounds and recorded three steals. Hill, a junior guard, was 4-6 from the floor and 3-5 from three-point range for 11 points. She also had three assists in the game.
Senior Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) and junior Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) both scored nine points for Southwestern. Hoch dished out a career-high seven assists in the game, pulled down eight rebounds and scored eight points.
The Pirates improve to 11-9 on the season with the win and are now 4-6 in the conference. Millsaps overall record falls to 3-16 and the Majors are now just 1-9 in the SCAC.
Southwestern plays again on Saturday (Feb. 3) when the Bucs travel to Memphis, TN to face off against the Rhodes College Lynx.
