In an afternoon non-conference tilt with the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs, the Southwestern University Pirate baseball team committed three costly errors in a 9-3 loss in Seguin, TX.
TLU struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. The Pirates come out in the top of the third with a Brent McMullen (Irving, TX/Nimitz HS) walk, followed by singles from Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) and Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS), with McMullen scoring and tying the game at 1-1 on Falcone's hit.
In the fourth, SU took a 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of hits, a walk and a couple of wild pitches from Bulldogs' starter Kyle Newman. Southwestern's lead was short-lived as Texas Lutheran regained the lead in the fifth inning. Falcone committed an error with two outs before the Bulldogs scored four runs off starter Scott Rogers (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus HS) and made the score 5-3.
The Bulldogs then padded their lead with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 9-3.
SU committed three errors in the game that led to six unearned runs. The Pirates had eight hits as a team compared to 12 by the Bulldogs.
McMullen was 1-2 in the game, scoring once and driving in a run. Falcone was the only other Pirate to drive in a run. Senior Brad Culling (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius HS) and sophomore Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) scored the other two runs for Southwestern.
Rogers suffered the loss as his record falls to 0-1 on the year. He allowed eight hits and six runs, although just one of them was earned and struck out one.
The Pirates return home for a game against McMurry University on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at 2:00 p.m. in Georgetown, TX.
