The Southwestern University women's basketball team forced 29 turnovers but was out-rebounded 42 to 21 in a 62-56 loss to the Austin College Kangaroos on Friday (Feb. 16) evening in Georgetown, TX.
The Roos took the lead early and kept it up throughout the half. Austin built its lead to a game-high 14 with 3:59 left in the first half when a pair of Katy Williams free throws gave the Roos a 33-19 lead. SU went in to the half trailing 35-26.
In the second half, the Pirates cut the lead to four with a 7-0 run that was capped by a Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) layup with 15:01 to play. Southwestern kept it close and took its only lead of the game at 5:59 on a Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) three-pointer that made the score 50-48. Austin answered with 11 straight points for a nine-point lead. The Kangaroos held off the Pirates for the six-point victory.
Senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) scored a game-high 19 points on 7-12 shooting, including 5-8 from the charity stripe. She also led the Pirates with six rebounds and grabbed two steals. Hill finished 4-9 from the floor, 3-6 from three-point range, for 11 points along with three assists, three steals and two blocks. Sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) ended with six points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Pirates managed to pull down just 21 rebounds, a season-low, in the contest. They shot 39.2 percent (20-51) from the field while the Kangaroos were 45.1 percent (23-51). Southwestern recorded a season-high 18 steals on the night.
The Pirates' record drops to 12-12 overall and 5-8 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Austin, meanwhile, improves to 8-5 in the conference and 14-8 overall.
Southwestern closes out the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 17) in Georgetown, TX against Hendrix College at 6:00 p.m.
