The Southwestern University Pirates baseball team used a late offensive burst to pick up a 7-6 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX on Tuesday (Feb. 13).
The Pirates struck first when first-year Blake Williams (Lufkin, TX/Lufkin HS) scored on a bases loaded walk by UMHB starter Les Sarles. The Crusaders answered in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs on two walks, a sacrifice fly and a hit. UMHB built its lead higher in the fourth inning when they scored two more runs thanks to two hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly. Then in the fifth, UMHB made the score 6-1 with two runs on three straight singles, a fielder's choice and an error.
The Pirate bats got going in the top of the seventh inning when first-year Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) singled through the right side to bring senior Ryan Bellomy (Dallas, TX/Jesuit HS) home from second. The next hitter, Landon Durham (Pearland, TX/Pearland HS) singled up the middle, scoring Matt Glenn (Dallas, TX/Wilson HS0 from third. This made the score 6-3 after seven.
In the eighth inning with the bases loaded, Bellomy singled to right field and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder with three runs scoring on the play. With the game tied at 6-6, Glenn drove a sacrifice fly to right to bring Bellomy home and put the Pirates ahead 7-6.
Mary Hardin-Baylor threatened to tie the game in the eighth but Bellomy threw out the tying run at home for the second out of the inning. Starting pitcher Andy Morrison (Austin, TX/Connally HS) issued a pair of two-out walks to load the bases but got out of the inning by getting a ground out to end the inning.
Morrison threw a complete game to pick up his first victory of the season. He allowed six runs, five of them earned, on 12 hits and seven walks. He also struck out six UMHB batters.
Bellomy and Boone both enjoyed multi-hit games as the two Pirates went two for five. Bellomy scored a pair of runs and also drove in a run in his first game of the season.
SU improves its record to 1-2 on the year while Mary Hardin-Baylor drops to 3-1-1. The two teams will face-off again on March 7 in Georgetown, TX at 7:00 p.m.
The Pirates' next game is Thursday (Feb. 15) when they host the Huston-Tillotson University Rams for a single game at 3:00 p.m. in Georgetown.
