Pirates Drop Season Opener in Extra Innings

The Southwestern University baseball team came out on the losing end of 4-1 decision in extra innings on Saturday (Feb. 10) afternoon in Georgetown, TX.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Eric Gonzales (Austin, TX/Bowie HS) led the inning off with a single followed by a single from Brad Culling (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius HS) with Gonzales taking an extra base and Culling moving up on the throw. Sophomore Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) drew a walk to load the bases before Schreiner pitcher Chris Armijo struck out the next two batters. First-year Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) came up with a two-out single up the middle to score Gonzales.

SU pitching held Schreiner scoreless until the top of the ninth inning. Relief pitcher Matt Gruetzner (Bastrop, TX/Bastrop HS) struck out the first two hitters of the inning before issuing a walk. After a passed ball, Gruetzner intentionally walked Jeremiah Kester before hitting the next two hitters to tie the game.

Schreiner led off the 10th with a single before Eric Ruff (Bacliff, TX/Clear Creek HS) relieved Gruetzner. The Mountaineers loaded the bases with one out and pushed a run across on a squeeze bunt to go ahead 2-1. The Pirates put Kester on base and J.D. Escobar followed with a two-run single up the middle to put Schreiner ahead 4-1. In the bottom of the 10th, SU got the first two men on before Mountaineer pitcher retired the next three hitters.

Southwestern starting pitcher Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) held the Mountaineers scoreless over 7.2 innings. The right-hander struck out three and walked four, allowing five hits. Gruetzner suffered the loss for the Pirates, allowing two earned runs over 1.1 innings pitched on one hit and two walks. His record now stands at 0-1 for the season.

Culling collected three hits in the game in four at-bats, two of which were doubles. Boone was responsible for driving in the Pirates' only run, going 1-4 with one RBI. Sophomore Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) also had multiple hits, going 2-3 with a pair of singles.

Southwestern falls to 0-1 on the year while the Mountaineers improve to 4-1 on the year.

The two teams will square off again on Sunday (Feb. 11) at 1:00 p.m. in Georgetown, TX.
