Schreiner built a 26-9 lead over the SU women but the Pirates battled back to earn a 75-65 win over the Mountaineers on Monday (Dec. 17) afternoon in Georgetown, TX.
Southwestern fell behind 14-2 just over five minutes in to the game after committing six turnovers in that time frame. At the 9:21 mark, the Pirates had turned the ball over 10 times and trailed by 17. Southwestern managed to close the gap and make the score 37-29 going in to the half.
The Pirates came out in the second half with an 11-2 run, capped by six straight points from junior Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS). Southwestern extended the lead and built its lead as high as 17 with 7:10 left to play when senior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) stole a pass and took it down the floor for a layup. The game ended with the Pirates leading by 10.
Hill was the team's leading scorer as she put up 17 points on 6-12 shooting. She was 2-6 from beyond the three-point arc and 3-5 from the free throw line. Hill also pulled down five rebounds, dished out two assists and had three steals.
Fellow senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) posted the Pirates' first double-double of the season, totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds. She got a majority of her points at the charity stripe, making 7-8. Azizi finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) put up 13 points and was a perfect 6-6 from the floor.
As a team, Southwestern shot 55.1 percent (27-49) and out-rebounded Schreiner 45-28. The Pirates overcame 28 turnovers and cause 15 turnovers by the Mountaineers.
Southwestern improves to 6-2 on the season while Schreiner falls to 2-4. It was the third straight victory for the Pirates.
SU returns to action on Friday (Dec. 28) when they host North Central College at 5:00 pm as part of the Southwestern University Invitational.
