For the second straight year, the SU men's soccer team tied the Lynx from Rhodes College 0-0 in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Oct. 5) as neither team could slip in to the net.
The Pirates had a scoring opportunity early on when senior Kyle Strine (Houston, TX/Klein Oak HS) had a penalty kick during the seventh minute but Rhodes' Alex Margolin made a diving stop to preserve the score at 0-0. Both teams had just one shot on goal in the first half.
In the second period, Southwestern held the Lynx to just two shots with neither being on goal while the Pirates put five shots on the goal but were stopped on all of them. In the first overtime period, Rhodes attempted four shots with all of them going wide of the goal while SU was unable to get off a single shot. In the final overtime period, the Pirates tested Margolin who made two crucial saves to keep SU off the board.
Seniors Strine and Scott Smith (Houston, TX/Jersey Village HS) each put two shots on the goal for Southwestern. SU out-shot Rhodes 12-8 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Pirates were called offside eight times in the game.
With the tie, SU moves to 6-4-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play while Rhodes goes to 3-5-1 and 2-2-1 in conference competition.
The Pirates host Hendrix College for another SCAC game on Sunday (Oct. 7) in Georgetown with a 2:00 p.m. start time.
