It took 31 matches before the SU volleyball team got to play on its home floor and the Pirates won their home opener in style, 3-0 (30-18, 30-28, 30-14) over the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs on Wednesday (Oct. 24) night in Georgetown, TX.
Sophomore Lauren Brown (Austin, TX/Saint Michael's Academy) led the Pirates on offense with 11 kills. The middle blocker had just three attack errors, a hitting percentage of .471 along with four block assists and five digs. Senior Marie Bruce (Austin, TX/Connally HS) averaged over 11 assists per game with 34 in three games and 11 digs.
Katy Lukaszewsi (Pasadena, TX/Deer Park HS) also had 11 digs as well as eight kills and three block assists. Sophomore Audra Gentry (Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Preparatory) turned in seven kills for the Pirates.
Southwestern's record improves to 21-10 on the season while TLU drops to 17-6. The Pirates finished with an 8-6 record in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play and will be the sixth seed in the conference tournament beginning on Friday (Nov. 2).
The Pirates will play on their home court again this coming weekend as they host the Southwestern Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 26-27) with two other NCAA Division III teams, one NCAA Division II team, on provisional NCAA Division I team and an NAIA school all participating.
