The Southwestern University women's basketball team made a late run against Hendrix College on Sunday (Jan. 7) but fell to the Warriors 65-62 in Conway, AR.

Hendrix came out of the gate with a 9-2 run but the Pirates answered with a nine point run of their own to take the lead, 11-9. SU took its last lead of the game at the 7:43 mark when a Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) layup put the Pirates ahead 17-16. The Warriors closed out the half with a 29-24 lead.

In the second half, HC built its lead to 13 with 8:11 on the clock. The Pirates began chipping away at the lead and managed to tie the score at 59-59 on a Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) layup with 2:48 to go. The Warriors then scored six straight before senior Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) hit a three to pull within three. Kainthla attempted another three in the final seconds but it didn't fall and Hendrix came up with the rebound.

George was a solid 9-11 from the floor for a team-high 18 points. Azizi and Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) both added 11 for Southwestern. Azizi did it on 4-7 shooting, pulled down four rebounds and also registered a pair blocks and a pair of assists. Stephenson hit three three-pointers while also adding a two-point field goal.

Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) led all SU players with six rebounds. Kainthla recorded eight points off the bench, along with three boards.

The Pirates out-shot the Warriors 47.1 percent to 40.7 percent but Hendrix made up for it by connecting on 18-25 from the charity stripe. Hendrix held a slight 34-33 advantage in rebounds.

Southwestern's record falls to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action. Hendrix, meanwhile, improves to 13-1, 3-0 for the year.
