Second Half Burst Gives SU 61-48 Victory over Austin College

The SU women's basketball team picked up its second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win of the season on Friday (Jan. 5) evening in Sherman, TX as they brought down the Austin College Kangaroos 61-48.

Southwestern's Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) scored the first six points of the game but the `Roos answered with an eight-point run of their own. Throughout the first half, the score went back and forth with 10 lead changes and three tied scores. The largest lead of the half came when the Pirates were ahead 6-0. The teams went in to halftime with the score tied at 23 a piece.

The Pirates came out in the second half with a 7-0 run with senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) scoring the first five and Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) capping the run with a pair of foul shots. SU led by at least five points the rest of the way with the largest lead of 16 points coming when first-year Narisa Trammell (Godley, TX/Godley HS) hit four straight free throws.

George led all players by scoring 17 points on 7-14 shooting. The senior forward was also 3-6 from the charity stripe. Azizi poured in 14 for the Pirates, connecting on 7-12 from the floor, and also recorded two blocks, two rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Junior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) had a team-high six rebounds while also adding seven points and two assists. Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) scored nine points, going 3-6 from behind the three-point arc. Senior Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) was credited with a game-high four assists.

Southwestern out-shot Austin 41.2 percent to 27.8 percent and also had less turnovers (17) than the `Roos (19). AC held the advantage on the boards, pulling down 40 rebounds to the Pirates' 36. SU's record improves to 8-4 overall, 2-1 in conference play.

The Pirates continue SCAC play on Sunday (Jan. 7) when they travel to Conway, AR to face the 12-1, 2-0 in SCAC, Hendrix Warriors at 2:00 p.m.
