The Southwestern University women's basketball team lost to the Centre College Colonels on Friday (Jan. 19) evening in Danville, KY despite a season-high 27 points from senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS).
The Pirates only lead of the game came less than six minutes in to the first half when a Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) layup made the score 8-6. Centre took the lead for good with 11:19 on the clock when Monica Vonderbrink hit one of her five three-pointers in the game. SU managed to keep it close for much of the game and were as close as three with 3:23 left in the game. The Colonels then closed out the game with an 11-0 run for the 71-57 victory.
George's 27 points led all players as she connected on 10-15 from the floor and 7-8 from the charity stripe. The forward also pulled down eight rebounds for the Pirates. Azizi put together a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. No other Southwestern player scored more than three points in the game.
SU out-shot the Colonels 44 percent to 37.5 percent but Centre connected on 11 three-pointers in the contest while the Pirates hit just one. The Pirates also held a 40-36 advantage in the rebounding department. Southwestern was undone by turning the ball over 24 times.
The Pirates return to play on Saturday (Jan. 20) as they travel to Greencastle, IN to face the 10th-ranked DePauw University Tigers at 6:00 p.m.
