Southwestern Picks up Non-Conference 74-56 Victory over Schreiner

The Southwestern University women's basketball team improved its overall record to 5-2 on the season, taking down the Schreiner University Mountaineers 74-56 in Kerrville, TX on Saturday (Dec. 9) afternoon.

The Pirates jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first three minutes but Schreiner answered with a 7-0 run to go ahead 10-9. The first half saw 10 lead changes, with the final one coming on a Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) three-pointer at 5:05 to put the Pirates ahead 33-31. Kainthla's three sparked a 14-6 run that ended with an Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) layup with seven seconds on the clock to give Southwestern a 45-37 halftime lead.

The Pirates come out in the second half and outscored the Mountaineers 12-2 in the first 7:05 of the period with six of the points scored by senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS). Southwestern maintained control of the game throughout the half and held its largest lead when George made a layup for a 20 point lead.

George was 9-13 from the floor, 4-4 from the charity stripe, for a game-high 22 points along with 11 rebounds for a double-double. The only other Southwestern player to score in double-digits was Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) who scored 11 points and was 3-7 from three-point range.

Kainthla was also 3-7 from behind the three-point line and scored nine points. She also dished out a game-high six assists and five steals. Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) pulled down nine boards and totaled eight points.

As a team, the Pirates shot 42 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the three-point arc. They forced the Mountaineers in to 20 turnovers and held a 49-41 advantage in rebounds.

Southwestern's next game is on Sunday (Dec. 17) in Georgetown, TX against Hanover College at 2:00 p.m.
