Southwestern Continues to Roll with 73-45 Victory over Millsaps

The Southwestern University women's basketball team won its conference opener and fourth in a row on Friday (Dec. 1) evening in Georgetown, TX as the Pirates took down the Millsaps Majors 73-45.

Southwestern fell behind 3-2 at 18:30 in the first half and didn't trail the rest of the way. After being tied 5-5, junior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano HS) hit a three-pointer to put the Pirates ahead 8-5 3:34 in to the game. SU then went on a 19-4 run to go up 24-9 with 11:35 on the clock. Southwestern led by as much as 18 during the half and took a 17-point lead in to the half.

The second half was more of the same for the Pirates, extending the lead to 26 on a Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) layup. Southwestern had its largest lead with 23 seconds left to play when Sarah Warren (Argyle, TX/Argyle HS) hit a three to put SU up 73-42. The game ended after a Crystal Dickerson three-pointer to bring the final score to 73-45.

Thomas scored 14 points off the bench on 7-11 shooting and pulled down six rebounds. Senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) also scored 14 for the Pirates, connecting on 7-10 and grabbing a team-high eight boards. Sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) added 13 points, two rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. These three players combined to go 20-28 from the floor for 41 points.

Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) and Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) both had four assists. First-year Jessica Herbst (Boerne, TX/Boerne HS) had a game-high two blocks while Warren connected on 3-3 from the floor, 2-2 from three-point range, for eight points in 14 minutes.

All 14 players played for SU in the victory. As a team, the Pirates shot 50.8 percent from the field. Southwestern out-rebounded Millsaps 42-38 and forced the Majors in to 25 turnovers.

Southwestern is now 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play while Millsaps drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference.

The Pirates play again on Saturday (Dec. 2) as they resume conference play against the Rhodes College Lynx at 6:00 p.m. at home.
