The Southwestern University women's basketball team picked up win number three by defeating the University of Dallas Crusaders 74-62 on Tuesday (Nov. 28) night in Irving, TX.
Four minutes in to the game, Dallas led by one but then strung together 13 unanswered points for a 17-3 lead at 12:25. Southwestern managed to fight back over the next 10 minutes and then take a one point lead on a Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) jumper with 1:58 to play in the half. The Pirates led by as many as three in the half but took a 27-26 lead in to the half.
The Pirates never trailed in the second half, despite five ties. The Crusader tied the game for the final time with 7:41 on the clock with a Kelly Robertson free throw. Southwestern then answered with a pair of Azizi free throws to take a 56-54 lead. SU was 13-16 from the charity stripe during the final four minutes to help put the game away.
Azizi led the way for the Pirates, hitting on 4-8 from the field and 14-15 from the free throw line, totaling a season-high 22 points. The sophomore also pulled down seven rebounds for the Pirates. Junior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) pitched in with 13 points, as did Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS). Hill and Hoch had seven rebounds a piece.
Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) and Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) both recorded eight points while Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) was credited with a game-high eight assists.
The Pirates out-rebounded the Crusaders 35-29 and out-shot them 46.5 percent to 31.4 percent. Southwestern improves to 3-1 on the season with the win
The Pirates play again on Friday (Dec. 1) as they open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play against the Millsaps Majors in Georgetown, TX at 6:00 p.m.
