SU Extends Winning Streak to Five with Two Conference Victories

The Southwestern University men's soccer team picked up two more wins this weekend on the road against SCAC opponents.

On Friday (Oct. 27), the Pirates took down the Sewanee Tigers in Sewanee, TN by a 5-0 margin. David Lozano (Austin, TX/University of Dayton) opened the scoring with a goal during the 23rd minute, assisted by Kyle Strine (Houston, TX/Klein Oak HS). Senior Darryn Lewis (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) extended the SU lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal at the 34:15 mark.

Preston Hollis (Austin, TX/McCallum HS) put the Pirates ahead by three with a goal during the 42nd minute and then Brian Kasper (Dallas, TX/Rockwall HS) made it four less than a minute later. Lewis was credited with an assist on the goal. The Pirates' final goal was scored by Lauro Davalos (Mission, TX/Mission HS) in the 63rd minute, assisted by Kasper.

Southwestern out-shot Sewanee 27-8 and goalie Ryan Tasin (Georgetown, TX/Georgetown HS) only had to make two saves to preserve the shutout.

The Pirates then faced Oglethorpe University on Sunday (Oct. 29) in Atlanta, GA, pulling out a 3-2 win over the Stormy Petrels.

It took less than five minutes for SU to get on the board as Patrick Dailey (Albuquerque, NM/University of Incarnate Word) scored with an assist from Lewis. Davalos then fed Lewis for a goal that put the Pirates ahead by two during the 38th minute.

Russell Kramer pulled OU within one during the 49th minute but Lozano put the game out of reach in the 50th minute with a goal off a corner kick by Daniel Webb (Austin, TX/Westlake HS). David Muller scored in the final 10 minutes to bring the score to 3-2.

Oglethorpe held a 17-15 advantage in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks.

With the wins, the Pirates improve to 11-6-1, 6-1-1 in SCAC competition. They are currently second in the conference, five points behind Trinity University.

The Pirates' final game of the season comes on Saturday (Nov. 4) against Trinity in Georgetown, TX at 2:00 p.m.
