Volleyball Takes Third Consecutive Conference Match

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Southwestern University Pirates volleyball team defeated the Austin College Kangaroos in four sets (23-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22), taking three of its four conference matches on its weekend Colorado road trip. 

Ashley Whitlock continued to shine with 16 kills on a .414 hitting percentage with five assisted blocks and one solo block. Her effort capped off a weekend with three consecutive matches with double-digit kills, producing a total of 38 with hitting percentages of .750, .333, and .414. 

Brandi Campos and Makenzie Mendez were magnificent defensively, finishing with 24 and 17 digs, respectively. Mendez also finished with 42 assists, helping three different Pirates finish with 10 or more kills. 

After two tight sets, the Pirates dominated the third set, limiting Austin College to just five kills and forcing 10 attack errors for a -.147 hitting percentage for the 25-13 win. 

Jamison Duck had another double-double with 10 kills (and only two attack errors) and 15 digs with three blocks assisted on. Mason Kennon led Austin College with 15 kills on 40 attacks with five errors and 11 digs. The Kangaroos finished with a .132 hitting percentage as a team, compared to Southwestern's .204. 

With the win, the Pirates improve to 12-10 on the season and 8-3 in conference play while Austin College dropped to 13-11 and 5-5 in conference play. Southwestern now sits third in conference after taking there consecutive conference matches, trailing only nationally ranked Trinity University (10) and Colorado College (5). 

The Pirates will resume conference play next weekend with road matches against Centenary College and Austin College on Oct. 20 in Sherman, Texas. There are five matches remaining before the SCAC Championship on Nov. 2 in Dallas.
