Southwestern drops dual-match opener to St. Edward's, 7-2

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University women's tennis team opened dual-match play with a 7-2 loss to St. Edward's Saturday at Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.

The Pirates (0-1) picked up both points in doubles action.

Anna Schneemann and Emilie Moeller defeated Anjali Sampath and Marissa Williams at the top doubles spot, 8-5.

Taste Drews-Jones and Jessey Martinez won at the second position, defeating Valentina Martinez and Elisa Guile, 8-6.

The Hilltoppers (2-1) swept all six singles matchups and earned a victory at No. 3 doubles.

Drews-Jones pushed Sampath to three sets at the top spot before falling. Sampath won the opening panel, 6-4, but Drews-Jones countered with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set to pull even. However, Sampath collected a 6-2 victory in the third stanza to earn the point.

Meanwhile, Martinez battled Williams to a three-set decision at the third position.

Southwestern will resume action next Saturday, as the squad travels to play both Austin College and Texas-Dallas on the road. The Pirates will match up with the 'Roos at 10 a.m. in Sherman and then travel over to Richardson to face the Comets at 4 p.m.
