Jordan Owens set a new SU scoring record with 36 points against Howard Payne University on Saturday, but the Pirates fell 76-74 after a last second shot by HPU's Danyel Bradley.
Owens broke her own record of 34 points set in 2012 and was unstoppable with 22 first half points on 10-14 shooting.
Bradley wasn't far behind with 17 points as the Yellow Jackets took a two point lead into the break, 39-37.
HPU held on to the lead most of the second half until Audrey Garcia's layup handed the lead to the Pirates for the first time in the frame with three minutes remaining.
Bradley took over with a pair of free throws to give the lead back to HPU with 33 seconds remaining. Owens scored her record setting points on the next possession to tie the game again 74-74. Bradley could not be stopped, however, as she brought the ball down the court, into the lane and beat two SU defenders for the game winning layup.
Olivia Podaras added in 12 points as Southwestern shot 45.6% from the floor, 9.1% from three point range and 68.8% from the free throw line.
Two Yellow Jackets posted double-doubles in the win. Bradley had 34 points with 11 rebounds and Sarah Van Remmen 16 points and 14 rebounds. HPU shot 36.2% from the floor, 25% from three point range and 74.1% from the free throw line.
Southwestern falls to 1-3 on the year while HPU improves to 2-1. SU faces Louisiana College on Sunday with a 2pm tipoff.
