GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Football found a way to outlast Sewanee on Saturday to get back on track at 1-1 in the SAA, 39-31. The offense continues to find success averaging 33 points on the season, while the defense created three crucial turnovers to clinch it. The Pirates move to 3-2 overall.
Breakout performances were the key to victory as sophomore
Reece Cutrer made key players in the passing game. Junior
Cam Roberson flipped the field twice with a pair of interceptions. Junior
Devin Baylor was the leader on the ground with 82 yards and a touchdown. Southwestern improved to 4-0 against the Tigers all-time.
1Q HIGHLIGHTS
- The Pirates started sophomore Jaxon Sims at quarterback but also used junior Jacob Smith as a passer, rusher, and also receiver utilizing both skillsets.
- Sewanee found the end zone with a 66-yard passing touchdown as the Pirates struggled stopping the big play.
- Sims led the squad down the field on the next drive, capped by a beautiful seam down the middle to freshman Christian Murray for the 26-yard touchdown. The touchdown marked his first career as he earned a big night with 65 yards receiving.
- The Tigers answered with a touchdown but missed the extra point.
2Q HIGHLIGHTS
- Baylor helped the Pirates get down the field on the ground as junior Graydon Thompson caught his seventh receiving touchdown of the season to make it 14-13. Thompson is just one touchdown away from tying the program record for a season since the program was reinstated.
- Sophomore Tycen Williams and Baylor combined for another big drive as Williams ran in another touchdown making it 21-13.
- The Tigers completed a big 49-yard completion to set up a touchdown before halftime.
3Q HIGHLIGHTS
- The Tigers flipped the game with another touchdown, taking a four-point lead.
- Momentum looked bleak for the Pirates after a fumble. However, Roberson flipped the mometum with his first interception.
- A few plays later, Southwestern pulled off a highlight reel trick play.
- Sims handed it off to Smith who threw it back across the field to Sims. The sophomore quarterback threw it into coverage in the endzone as Cutrer made an unbelievable catch over his defender for score.
- Sophomore Braeden Cundiff picked up a huge Tiger fumble as the Pirates led by two with the ball.
4Q HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Austin Hill entered the game to drill two massive field goals to extend the lead to 33-25.
- However, Sewanee answered with a touchdown but Roberson intercepted the two-point conversion attempt as the Pirates still led 33-31.
- The insurance touchdown by Baylor capped his breakout performance in his first season as a Pirate, 39-31.
- Sewanee still had a chance to tie it before Roberson picked off the Tigers for the third time, sealing the SAA victory.
GAME NOTES
- The Southwestern offense found success again at home averaging 42 points at Birkelbach.
- Sims found his groove again with 296 yards passing on three touchdowns for his highest yardage game.
- Baylor, Williams, and Smith combined for 207 yards on the ground.
- Thompson had another big game receiving with 90 yards.
- Five different Pirates totaled at least five tackles.
